WhatsApp Ads: A Simple Guide to Ads That Click to WhatsApp

What Are WhatsApp Ads?

WhatsApp Ads (often called "Ads That Click to WhatsApp") are ads you run on Facebook and Instagram. When someone taps your ad, they don't go to a website or a form — they go straight into a WhatsApp chat with your business. One tap, and they're talking to you.

These ads show up in people's feeds and stories on Facebook and Instagram, and on Facebook Marketplace. The button on the ad usually says something like "Send Message" or "Chat on WhatsApp." Meta (the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) runs them through the same place you run other Facebook and Instagram ads: Meta Ads Manager.

Why Use WhatsApp Ads?

Most people already use WhatsApp. Billions do. So when your ad sends them to a chat instead of a landing page, they're more likely to respond. There's no form to fill, no new site to load — just a conversation.

Studies back this up. Businesses using WhatsApp for leads have seen much higher conversion and lower cost per lead compared to sending people to a webpage. One reason: you're meeting people where they already are. Another: Meta often waives WhatsApp conversation fees for a few days when the chat starts from an ad, so you can reply without extra cost right away.

You can use these ads to get new leads, answer product questions, send offers, or even close sales — all in the chat.

How WhatsApp Ads Work

You create an ad in Meta Ads Manager and choose "WhatsApp" as the place people go when they click. You pick the Facebook Page that has your WhatsApp number connected. When someone clicks the ad, their WhatsApp opens with a new chat to your business number. You can reply yourself, or use a chatbot, or both.

Where Your Ads Show

Your ads can run on Facebook feed, Facebook Stories, Instagram feed, Instagram Stories, and Facebook Marketplace. You control this in the "Placements" section when you set up the ad.

What You Need Before You Start

  • A WhatsApp Business account (the app or the API, depending on your size)
  • Your WhatsApp number connected to your business's Facebook Page
  • A Meta ad account (same one you use for Facebook/Instagram ads)

If your WhatsApp number isn't linked to your Page yet, you can do that from your Facebook Page settings or when you're creating the ad — Meta will prompt you to connect it.

How to Set Up WhatsApp Ads Step by Step

These steps match how Meta's Ads Manager works. The exact screens can vary a bit by region and account, but the flow is the same.

Step 1: Create your WhatsApp Business account

If you don't have one, download the WhatsApp Business app or set up the WhatsApp Business API for your company. Use a number you can keep for your business (not a personal number you might change).

Step 2: Connect WhatsApp to your Facebook Page

Go to your business's Facebook Page. In settings, find the option to add or connect a WhatsApp number. Enter your WhatsApp Business number and complete the steps. Meta will send a code to that number to confirm it's yours. Once connected, that number is the one that will receive chats when people click your ads.

Step 3: Open Ads Manager and start a new campaign

Go to Ads Manager (adsmanager.facebook.com) and click Create. You'll choose a campaign objective first. For WhatsApp ads, the ones that work are usually:

  • Traffic or Engagement — good for getting people to start a chat
  • Leads — good when you want to collect contacts and qualify leads in the chat
  • Sales — good when you want to drive purchases or orders via WhatsApp
  • Awareness — good for reach and brand awareness, with WhatsApp as the destination

Pick the one that fits your goal and click Continue.

Step 4: Choose WhatsApp as the destination

When you're setting up the campaign or ad set, look for the section about where people go when they click. It might be called "Message destinations," "Conversions," or "Destination." Check the box for WhatsApp. If WhatsApp is grayed out, click "Connect account" and link your WhatsApp number to the Page (same as Step 2). Then select WhatsApp and continue.

Step 5: Set your budget, schedule, and audience

Set a daily or total budget and when the ad should run. Meta suggests running for at least seven days for better results. Then define who should see the ad: age, location, interests, or use a lookalike audience. An audience size in the 2–10 million range often works well, but it depends on your goal and budget.

Step 6: Create the ad (images, text, and message template)

Upload your image or video, write the headline and ad text, and pick your call-to-action (e.g. "Send WhatsApp Message"). In the message template section, you can set a greeting or suggested questions people can tap to start the chat (e.g. "Get a quote," "See offers"). This makes it easier for them to send the first message.

Step 7: Publish and monitor

Review everything and click Publish. Meta will review the ad (usually within 24 hours). Once it's approved, it starts running. Check Ads Manager for clicks, conversations started, and cost per result. Use that data to adjust audience, creative, or budget.

Tips That Make WhatsApp Ads Work Better

Reply fast — or use a chatbot

When someone clicks your ad and opens WhatsApp, they expect a quick reply. If they see "An agent will be with you shortly" and wait too long, they leave. Use a chatbot for instant answers and to collect basic info, and hand off to a person when needed. Many businesses use a mix of bot and human.

Do what your ad promised

If your ad says "Get 20% off — chat now," send the discount as soon as they say hi. If it says "Ask us anything about this product," make sure the bot or agent can actually answer. When you keep your promise, people trust you and are more likely to buy.

Ask for permission to message them later

WhatsApp's rules say you need the user's opt-in to send them marketing messages after the first chat. Ask clearly within the first 72 hours (e.g. "Can we send you offers and updates on WhatsApp?"). If they say yes, you can nurture them with follow-up messages. If you don't ask, you can't message them later for promotions.

Use the first chat to learn about them

When they click from an ad, use the conversation to ask what they need, what they're interested in, or basic details (e.g. size, budget). That way you can send relevant follow-ups and offers later. The more helpful you are in the first chat, the more they're willing to share.

Who Are WhatsApp Ads Good For?

They work well for local businesses (salons, clinics, stores), e-commerce brands, course sellers, real estate, and anyone who wants leads or sales and is ready to talk to customers on WhatsApp. If your audience already uses WhatsApp a lot, these ads are a strong fit.

Bottom Line

WhatsApp Ads send people from Facebook and Instagram straight into a WhatsApp chat with your business. You need a WhatsApp Business number linked to your Facebook Page and a Meta ad account. Set up the campaign in Ads Manager, choose WhatsApp as the destination, and create an ad that clearly tells people what they get when they chat. Reply quickly, keep your promise, and get opt-in so you can message them again. Done right, you get more leads and conversations without the friction of a landing page.
